Ottón Solís Described As A Disastrous
President
Although the Costa Rican presidential
elections is still more than five months
away, the name calling has begun, the first
out being Jorge Eduardo Sánchez, head of the
Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC),
calling Ottón Solís as a "presidente nefasto"
(disastrous president).
Sánchez leads the party that has former
president Rafael Ángel Calderón as its
presidential candidate.
Speaking about his candidate, Sánchez, feels
strongly that Calderón, who he describes as
an historic leader and an important person
in the party, will not be sentenced for his
role in the Caja-Fischel case that is its
closing stage.
"We put our trust in the Costa Rican
judicial system and hope the courts will
clear everything up in the coming weeks",
said Sánchez.
Sánchez went on to explain that if Calderón
should be found guilty, the party would
suffer a small ripple but it has long
standing roots and over the years it has
shown consistency.
The party leader admitted that losing
Calderón would be a great loss not only for
the party, but for the country, but the
party would stand firm as it "has
ideological roots that transcend its own
birth and that are more relevant today than
ever".
A key figure that would emerge from a guilty
Calderón would be his wife, Gloria Bejarano,
who has been described as an intelligent,
pro-active woman, with programs of her own
who has shown herself with action and not
just words.
Sánchez says he has been a supporter of
Calderón from the beginning and is sure that
Gloria would fill the void if the inevitable
would happen.
Even if Calderón is convicted, Sánchez is of
the strong belief that the trial is not of
personal character and the other parties
will not dare throw stones on the PUSC as
the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) has
its own problems with the fleeing of former
president, José María Figueres, who has
refused to return to Costa Rica and obtained
a second nationality to ensure his freedom.
Sánchez added that the Partido Acción
Cuidadana (PAC) also faces its own problems
with their leader Ottón Solís, a legislative
deputy and then on to found his own party,
that was hand picked by Figueres himself.
On Ottón, Sánchez feels that he would a
disastrous president and the people will
judge him and the party, the party that
stalled the free trade agreement, for
instance, even though the public voted in
favour.
Sánchez is adamant that the worst for the
country is if Ottón were elected president.
"My party may be small at this moment, but
it has deep roots", said Sánchez, who is
confident that 2010 will break the "Arimso"
and return the PUSC back to power with the
leadership of Calderón.
The 2010 presidential elections will be held
on Sunday, February 7 and the new president
taking office on May 1.
Currently, former vice-president, Laura
Chinchilla, leads in the polls. |
