Chile: Bachelet hits Record 72 Percent

Santiago, Chile - Chilean
president Michelle Bachelet reached a
historic 72 percent approval in a survey
conducted by the Center of Public Studies (CEP),
but the presidential candidate for
Concertacion, Eduardo Frei, marches second
with 39 points.
The influential survey recalled that
Bachelet�s popularity increased six points
since June (66) and is over the rates of all
previous presidents of Concertacion:
Patricio Aylwin, Eduardo Frei and Ricardo
Lagos.
Only 15 percent of those interviewed
disapprove her work as head of government
and 10 percent did not approve nor
disapprove her mandate, added the CEP.
About the presidential elections next
December, the survey showed the candidate of
right-wing Alianza por el Cambio, Sebastian
Pinera, maintains first place with 37
percent, followed by officialist former
president Eduardo Frei (28) and independent
Marco Enriquez-Ominami (17).
According to these figures, elections would
have to be settled in a second round next
January, 2010, occasion in which CEP
estimates Pinera would obtain 42 percent of
the votes, against 39 percent of Frei,
resulting in a "technical tie."
For the Frei team, Pinera "is stuck" but in
fact, the popularity of their candidate
dropped two points compared to last June and
that of Enríquez-Ominami went up four
points, according to CEP.
The other three presidential candidates,
Jorge Arrate, Alejandro Navarro and Adolfo
Zaldivar, registered one point each.
As for "sincerity", 40 percent of those
asked by CEP considers Enríquez-Ominami has
that virtue, while Frei and Pinera would
rate 36 percent each.
When asked if the candidate is ready to
govern the country, Pinera and Frei were
tied with 64 percent, while Enriquez-Ominami
obtained 29 percent. |
