Ruling Party Seeks
Constitutional Reforms
Managua - The Nicaraguan
ruling party Sandinist Front of National
Liberation (FSLN) will boost this year's
constitutional reforms which will allow
President Daniel Ortega to seek reelection
and enable a mandate revocation.
Vice President of the Nicaraguan Supreme
Court of Justice (CSJ) Rafael Solis said on
Thursday that the constitutional changes
include those of judicial and electoral
power.
President Ortega on July 19 proposed a
constitutional reform in favor of
consecutive presidential terms and the
revocation of executive and legislative
power as well as the mayoralties through
public referendum.
Nicaragua's constitution, amended since
1995, allows only one presidential term at a
time and two non-consecutive terms.
Solis said that the mandate revocation will
allow the removal of officials from
executive positions when the person in
question is considered disqualified.
Solis also rejected the opposition
accusation that the reforms are sought to
pave the way for Ortega's reelection after
2011. |
