President Opens Salvador Independence Fest
San Salvador - Salvadorian president,
Mauricio Funes, inaugurated activities
commemorating the 188th anniversary of the
Independence with a call for national unity
to confront problems inherited from the
past.
During his speech to hundreds of persons in
the central park of Suchitoto city, Funes
called on social, political, business,
religious and academic forces to link forces
against violence and delinquency.
"Together we can conquer fear, crime,
insecurity of our people," Funes said and
noted the work of prevention done by more
than 100 mayoralties that has led to a
reduction of these indexes.
The president announced new projects of
social benefit such as the construction of
25,000 new housing, construction of a
maternal hospital and a center for integral
attention of women as well as granting title
deeds to poor families. Representatives of
the three State powers, students, members of
the indigenous community and music and arts
group attended the inauguration of national
festivities.
Suchitoto was chosen to begin festivities
due too its cultural wealth and
architectural beauty, informed Ernesto
Zelayandia, president of the organizing
committee.
The purpose of these festivities is to
highlight values such as respect, honesty,
unity and solidarity, expressed government
minister, Humberto Centeno,
The central event will be held in this
capital on September 15 in which, for the
first time, the president will preside over
the traditional parades of students,
soldiers and police.
Funes will also go the border point of Las
Chinamas to receive, from his Guatemalan
counterpart, Alvaro Colom, the Central
American torch of independence that will be
carried through Salvadorian territory.
In contrast to previous years the torch of
peace and liberty will not be taken to
Honduras as repudiation of Central American
nations against the de facto regime that
overtook power with a coup on June 28.
Central American nations, formed by the
Guatemalan General Captaincy proclaimed
independence from Spain on September 15,
1821 after centuries of colonial domination. |
