Judge Orders arrest Of 129
Former Soldiers, Police
Santiago - Chilean judge
Victor Montiglio issued arrest warrants
Tuesday against 129 former Chilean soldiers
and police for human rights violations
during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship.
The accused are former agents of the
National Intelligence Directorate (DINA),
the Chilean secret police under the
1973-1990 Pinochet regime.
They are charged with participating in
bloody incidents such as Operation Condor
and Conferencia Street.
In Operation Condor, which took place in the
1970s, the governments of Argentina,
Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay
assassinated dissidents, causing hundreds of
people to disappear.
In the Conferencia Street incident, 10
communists got lost from their Santiago base
on Conferencia Street in 1976.
The Pinochet regime has been held
accountable for numerous human rights abuses
including some 3,000 deaths and
disappearances. |
