AH1N1 Vaccine Testing In Costa Rica Ends, Results Expected In 30 Days

The results of the AH1N1 vaccine tests are expected to be available within the next 30 days now that the trial phase has ended. A total 784 Costa Ricans took part in the trials held at the Instituto de Atención Pediátrica (IAP).

The group made up of adults and children between the ages of 3 and 64 were given a dose of the vaccine produced by the Swiss pharmaceutical, Novartis, one of six which is working on a vaccine for the AH1N1.

Health officials say that the side effects of the vaccine have been minor and within a month the body could begin to generate antibodies against the AH1N1.

In Costa Rica the number of deaths from the AH1N1 flu virus is 33. A total of 1.115 cases have been confirmed, with the majority of the new confirmed cases being centred in Pérez Zeledón, Limón and Puntarenas.
