Costa Rica Predicts Fall in Tourism
Costa
Rica's tourism officials foresee an overall 12% fall in
tourism resulting in fewer visitors
and less revenues. During the first six months
of the year there was a 15% reduction due to the
world
economic recession.
The Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT)
prediction is compared to the record 2.1
million tourist arrivals in 2008.
During the first six months of this year
Costa Rica had an 18% drop in
visitors from the United States and 23% from Mexico.
Tourism has a large weight in the economic
performance of Costa Rica.
Costa Rican president Oscar Arias says the
economic recovery may not occur for another
one or two years.
Arias considered that economic recovery will
depend on recovery of its trade partner
countries.
The president added that Costa Rican
businesses must remain confident that the
country will move forward, which all depends
on increased investments. |
