Anti-Coup Hondurans Resist on Day 66
Tegucigalpa - Honduran people's forces and progressive
parties have reached on Tuesday their 66th
consecutive day of resistance against the
June 28 military coup.
Juan Barahona, general coordinator of the
National Front against the Coup d'Etat,
stated that despite the passing of time and
the military and police repression, people
will not give up or sell out.
The union leader said there is resistance in
the country's 18 departments and it will not
stop, even after the president's return. It
will continue until the nation achieves one
of its main objectives, which is to convene
a constituent assembly.
The objective is to approve a Constitution
to establish a participatory democracy and
social transformations, as well as eliminate
inequalities in the distribution of national
resources, Barahona said.
Members of the Front will be paying
attention to the results of a meeting of the
Organization of American States (OAS) to
analyze the crisis in Honduras.
The OAS demanded Zelaya's unconditional
return, suspended Honduras as an active
member of that organization on July 4, and
sent a mission of six foreign ministers to
Tegucigalpa last week to foster a negotiated
solution.
Nevertheless, the de facto government leader
Roberto Micheletti rejected the San Jose
Accord, presented by Costa Rican President
Oscar Arias, who had been promoted as
mediator by the United States. |
