Celebrations No To Be Affected By AH1N1
The AH1N1 flu virus will not affect the
Independence Day celebrations like it did
the "romeria" at the beginning of last
month, according to the ministerio de Salud.
Dr. Ana Morice, vice-ministra de Salud, said
that the number of infected has dropped in
the last weeks and there is no indication
that it will begin to rise again and does
not consider it necessary to suspend the
festivities of September 15.
Morice added that the conditions at the
beginning of August that cancelled the
celebrations of the Virgen de los Ángeles
and the annual walk to Cartago were
different than today.
Costa Rica this year celebrates its 188th
year of independence.
Dr. Morice explained that the infection rate
in the Metropolitan Area (San José) is on
the decrease and the independence day
activities are local, unlike the "romeria"
where massive groups of people from all over
the country gather in Cartago.
The September 15 celebration, apart from the
brief public functions, is mainly centred in
school and local activities of patriotism,
reducing the risk of spreading infection.
Dr. Morice reiterated that those in the high
risk group - pregnant women, obese,
hypertense and diabetics - should not assist
public functions. |
