Nearly 70% of
Brazilian Roads In Poor Condition
BRASILIA - Brazil's National Transport
Confederation (CNT) said on Wednesday that
69 percent of Brazilian roads were in fair,
poor or very poor condition.
"These results show at the same time the
poor situation of a long stretch of the road
network, and the major challenges to be
faced with the aim of empowering the main
transport infrastructure used in the
country," a CNT report said.
Roads in the northern region, which has the
smallest road network in the country, are in
the worst condition, while the southeast
enjoys the best roads in the country,
according to the survey which evaluated
roads on such criteria as pavement, traffic
signs, track geometry and the conditions of
bridges and barriers.
Taking all these data into account, the CNT
said 77.6 percent of the public road network
was in a fair, poor or very poor state,
while 23.6 percent of the toll roads were in
the same condition.
The main reason for the poor condition of
roads was mismanagement of tax funds for the
maintenance of roads, the CNT said.
