Ambitious
Program Set to Make Costa Rica a Rich Haven
for Table Tennis
A major aim of the ITTF Development
Programme is to encourage countries to take
the initiative; to use the material supplied
by the International Table Tennis Federation
to organize and promote their own courses at
grass roots level.
The ITTF Level One Coaching Manual is the
fountain of knowledge to advise, encourage
and teach prospective coaches who can then
spread the word and create a wide base from
which excellence may flow and heroes emerge.
Only a very small percentage will advance to
the highest levels, for the majority they
will stand in awe of those who excel but
they will have been introduced to a sport
they can enjoy, a sport that provides a
meaningful physical activity and is
something which will enable them to make
lasting friends.
Initiative
Like any other country in the world, if
the organization is good, coaching programs
are in place, then progress can made; for
table tennis in Costa Rica that seems now to
be more than just a pipe-dream.
Courses
Therefore, with the aim of increasing the
number of young people in the sport and
widening the base from which talent can
accrue, courses following the ITTF Level One
Coaching Programme are being staged from
Monday 26th to Friday 30th October 2009.
The eventual target is 120 teachers with a
Level One Coaches qualification in order
that every town in the country has qualified
personnel who can teach the sport of table
tennis.
Responsibility
Furthermore, a special course for women
under the direction of Argentina’s Alejandra
Gabaglio is being organized whilst those who
attended the ITTF Level Two Course in Costa
Rica under the guidance of Alexey Yefremov
of Belarus will have a responsibility to
oversee the work of the aspiring coaches.
Targets
It is an exciting and an ambitious program;
the concept is being backed by the
ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP) -
Ministry of Education - and is directed by
Fernando Aguilar, the Director of the Rules
Committee for the Latin American Table
Tennis Union.
The goal in terms of young people being
attracted to the sport in quite staggering.
In 2010, the aim is to cover the whole
country and give over 20,000 young people
the opportunity to sample the delights of
table tennis.
