Costa Rican Exports To The US Drop 15%
The sale of Costa Rican manufactured goods
to the United States fell 15% this past year
according to the Ministerio de Comercio
Exterior (Comex).
Comex says that exports to the US as of
September 30th of this year was down by
us$420 million dollars as compared to the
same period in 2008, attributing the drop to
economic crisis, which weakened the
purchasing power of Americans.
Items like pineapple and melon are among the
number of agricultural products that have
been affected by the drop, as well as
computers and textiles among the many
products produced in Costa Rica shipped
north. The United States is Costa Rica's
main trade partner, with 36% of exports
going north.
In contract, Costa Rican exports are down on
average 7.8% in other markets.
For the first nine months of 2009, exports
totaled us$6.5 billion dollars, a drop of
almost us$900 million compared to the same
period last year. |
