OAS Tries
to Revive Talks in Honduras
TEGUCIGALPA - OAS Political Affairs Secretary Victor Rico
arrived in Honduras, in another attempt to
revive talks that failed, due to the refusal
of the putschists to reinstate President
Manuel Zelaya.
Before Rico's arrival, OAS mission head in
Honduras John Biehl predicted the
possibility that an agreement ends the
crisis this week.
"It is a difficult situation, but I believe
an agreement will be reached," Biehl said.
Honduras reached on Monday four months under
a de facto regime.
After several weeks of talks Zelaya's
delegation ended the talks as a result of de
facto President Roberto Micheletti's
insistence of remaining in power and
continuing with the current electoral
process. The US State Department announced
that it would send a mission to that
country, headed by Deputy Secretary of State
for Latin American Affairs Thomas Shannon.
The purpose of the mission is to make
progress in the San Jose Agreement, promoted
by Washington, including restitution of
Zelaya as the first point, although
conditional on a series of aspects that
limit his functions. |
