Captures 40 Alleged FARC Guerilla Members
BOGOTA - The Colombian
authorities said on Monday that they had
captured 40 guerilla members of the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)
from across the country.
Felipe Munoz, director of the Colombian
Administrative Department of Security (DAS),
said the authorities had aimed at
53detentions in all and that those already
detained were members on the front under
FARC commander German Suarez.
The authorities also clarified that not all
of the detained were active combatants but
were collaborating with FARC.
Munoz added that Suarez is one of the major
FARC commanders.
The FARC has been the main target of the
"Democratic Security" policy launched by
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe since he
took office in 2002 and financed by the U.S.
government.
Allegedly the largest and oldest insurgent
group in the Americas, FARC now has an
estimated total force of 11,000, down from
16,000 in 2001. |
