Union Member Wounded in Honduras Protest
Dies
TEGUCIGALPA – A union leader wounded by a
gunshot in September in a demonstration
supporting the reinstatement in power of
deposed Honduran President Mel Zelaya died
on the weekend, the National Resistance
Front against the Coup d’Etat said Sunday.
Jairo Sanchez, the president of the Infop
union, died Saturday, Juan Barahona, general
coordinator of the Front said.
Sanchez was hit in the face by a bullet
during a peaceful march by popular
resistance demonstrators in the San
Francisco neighborhood in southwestern
Tegucigalpa on Sept. 22, Barahona said.
The march was broken up by police backed up
by army troops, he said.
Doctors could not remove the bullet from
Sanchez, who died in a hospital in the
capital from complications of his wound,
Barahona added.
The popular resistance against the coup
accuses the police of Sanchez’s death
because the security forces discharged their
weapons and fired tear gas to break up the
march, which was staged when the country was
under a state of emergency during which
constitutional guarantees had been
suspended.
A wake for Sanchez will be held at the Infop
offices on Sunday and his remains will be
buried on Monday, Barahona said.
Since the June 28 coup against Zelaya, at
least four people have died in different
incidents, none of which have been fully
clarified.
Since his surprise return to the Honduran
capital on Sept. 21, Zelaya has been housed
in the Brazilian Embassy, where on Monday he
hopes to resume the dialogue with the de
facto government regarding his return to
power.
The dialogue committees of Zelaya and the de
facto president, Roberto Micheletti,
suspended their meeting last Wednesday after
they could not agree on whether or not
Zelaya should be reinstated, but the talks
are slated to get under way again on Monday.
