Belize: Stop University Salary Freeze

BELMOPAN - Members of the University of Belize demanded to stop the salary freeze proposed by the university board until a dialogue with workers, professors and students takes place, it was reported on Thursday.

The demand corresponds to the decision of the administration to retain the salary increase for the next three years to the employs that reach more than 20,000 dollars annually.

According to Alison Crawford, spokeswoman of a committee organized to face this situation, the board broke the agreement to discuss the issue before taking a final decision.

Crowford summoned all the staff to a meeting on Friday to draft an action plan in view of the denial of the administration to discus the salary freeze.

Last Tuesday the board announced the measure and the increase in the school charges to face the financial troubles of the university and fulfill the social obligations as the principal academic institution in the country.
