Mudslide Leaves Four Dead
SAO PAULO – Four people died and another two
were injured before dawn Saturday in a
mudslide that knocked down the house in
which they were sleeping in Petropolis, a
city in the central part of the Brazilian
state of Rio de Janeiro.
Fire Department officials said that the
victims were members of a family whose home
was destroyed by a mudslide caused by the
heavy, continuous rains that fell during the
last four days in Rio de Janeiro.
The fatalities were the father, mother and
two children, while the injured were the
family’s other two children, who were taken
to a hospital that has not yet reported on
their condition.
Officials said that the house, located at
some 75 kilometers (47 miles) northeast of
the city of Rio de Janeiro, was in a place
that had been considered in danger of
imminent mudslides. |
