466 Years
Prison Faced By Attackers of Casino Workers
The families of the 3 victims of the brutal
and senseless attack on three casino workers
were clearly upset by the closing arguments of
the lawyer for the two men accused of the
murders of two of the women.
"My hand is itching to take out a gun and
kill them", said the father of one of the
victims in the hallway of the courthouse
after the closing arguments were concluded.
Miriam Bedoya has been defending the two men
on the basis of mental incapacity.
The lawyer, in her closing arguments said
that the men, her clients, where not in
their rightful mind the night of the murder
of the two women and attack on the third,
who had just finished their shift at the
White House casino in Escazú.
The men, in their testimony during the
trial, said that they had been drinking on
that night and an internal voice told them
to commit the attacks on the women in an
isolated part of the Escazú mountain near
the hotel.
The men shot one of the women and left her
on the side of the road near the hotel,
drove the other two to an automated teller
machine, later killing one and dumping her
body in Heredia, while the third was
attacked and left for dead as well.
Bedoya said in her closing arguments that
even though her clients had a history of
rape and sexula abuse, but they should not
be found guilty due to their mental
incapacity.
Cristian Mora Cantillano and Juan Carlos
Mena Jiménez face a total of 466 years of
prison for the murder of Yerlin Marín
Salazar and Arelis Marín and the attempted
murder of Angie Peraza. The men also face
prison time for robbery, sexual assault and
others.
The fiscal Natalia Sarkis detailed to the
court the prison term requested for each
criminal count, totalling 201 years for
Cristian and 195 years for Juan Carlos.
The verdict is expected on Tuesday.
The attack on the women occurred last
October 28, 2008, when the three women were
on their way home were intercepted by the
two men.
