Honduran Soldiers
Erect Platform To
Intimidate Brazilian Embassy
TEGUCIGALPA - Ousted
Honduran President Manuel Zelaya said on
Friday that a platform had been erected
outside the Brazilian embassy for close
monitoring of the embassy, where he has
sought refuge.
Zelaya told local media on Friday snipers
and lasers were targeted at the embassy and
its occupants from the platform.
The platform had been placed at the front of
the embassy on Thursday night and soldiers
were using binoculars to observe the
movements of the people inside the embassy.
People staying inside the house were
frightened due to the presence of the
soldiers, said Jose Luis Galdamez, a
journalist from local radio station Radio
Globo. He is currently accompanying Zelaya
in the embassy with about 60 of Zelaya's
relatives, journalists and Brazilian
diplomats.
"The soldiers hit their shields and the
walls to scare us, this is too much,"
Galdamez said.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued on Friday
by the Honduran embassy in Nicaragua,
Zelaya's supporters denounced the harassment
of those trapped in the embassy.
Zelaya's followers said in the statement
that the military siege around the embassy
continued with soldiers stopping the
delivery of canned food, washing and
cleaning stuff and mattresses into the
building.
They also said that, since Thursday, the
soldiers had added clean clothes to the list
of forbidden items proscribed by "high
level" orders.
The post-coup Hondoran government issued on
Sept. 27 a 10-day ultimatum to the Brazilian
government, demanding it define Zelaya's
migratory situation or to hand him over for
arrest. The Brazilian government has
rejected the demand.
