Thousands of
Nicaraguans Improve Sight Health
MANAGUA - Thousands of Nicaraguans
have improved their sight through the
performance of Cuban physicians who are part
of Miracle Mission and efforts of the
government of president Daniel Ortega,
informed a source of the sector.
A total of 58,000 persons have had surgery
in clinics of Sandino City, of Bilwi and
Bluefields, informed doctor Mercedes Argote,
director of these centers in an exclusive
interview to Prensa Latina.
Cataracts, glaucoma and pterigion are the
main diseases presented by the patients.
For example, the cost of a Pterigion
operation in a private Venezuelan centers,
one of the countries of the Bolivarian
Alliance for the Peoples of our America
(ALBA) costs about 2,000 dollars while
cataracts, more complicated, costs about
2,500 dollars.
However, through initiatives of Cuba and
Venezuela, through an effort of solidarity,
thousands of persons in the world improve
their sight and some again see the light of
the sun after years of darkness.
In Nicaragua, Cuban specialists reach the
entire national territory in surveillance to
find patients who are later remitted to
clinics where they are treated and most
receive surgery.
For Argote and his army of white gowns there
is no respite. It is common to see members
of the team move during weekends to capital
barrios, through cities and countryside to
help Nicaraguans recover their sight.
But ALBA efforts and solidarity go beyond
Miracle. Yesterday 62 Nicaraguans
specialists study and evaluate persons with
these handicaps.
Cuban Health vice Minister Marcia Cobas,
considers this work of the Cuban medical
brigade as a means by which science responds
to the needs of the people.
The work of these specialists will begin in
rural regions of Masaya and conclude in the
center of this department to identify
persons with son form of handicap requiring
medical attention. |
