Brazilian
President Says Micheletti Must Leave
Honduran Presidency
RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian President Luiz
Inacio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday that
the solution for the Honduran crisis is easy
-- the country's de facto President Roberto
Micheletti should leave his position, local
media reported.
"For us, the solution for the problems in
Honduras is very easy-- those who
participated in the coup should leave and
allow the legitimate and democratically
elected president to return," Lula said
during the Brazil-European Union Summit, in
Stockholm.
According to the Brazilian president, the
only thing wrong in Honduras is the presence
of a president who should not be in the
position.
Both Brazil and the EU condemned the coup
which took President Manuel Zelaya from his
position in late June. The leaders called
for respect to the inviolability of the
Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa, where
Zelaya is sheltered since mid-September, and
for the integrity of the deposed president,
his family and the members of his
administration.
Additionally, the leaders gathered in the
Brazil-EU Summit asked all the parties
involved in the conflict to work for a quick
solution of the matter.
On Monday, after much pressure from the
international community, President
Micheletti revoked a decree signed last
week, which had suspended the individual
liberties in the country.
On Wednesday, representatives from the
Organization of American States (OAS) will
arrive in Honduras to work in the
negotiations between the deposed and the de
facto government.
It is not known whether the representatives,
who come from Spain and several Latin
American countries, will manage to find a
solution before the Honduran presidential
elections, scheduled for late November.
