PUSC Party In A Scramble For A Leader To Replace Calderón

Who will replace Rafael Angel Calderón as leader of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC) party? One name being rumoured is Jorge Eduardo Sánchez.

The the PUSC party in a scramble to replace Calderón who resigned as party presidential candidate Monday after a court found him guilty of "peculado" and sentenced him to five years prison. The former president said he did not feel it was moral to ask for a vote under the circumstances.

Calderón is expected to focus on his legal problems although there is no legal impediment for him to continue to lead the party into the 2010 elections.

Although the court, in its sentence of Calderón, prohibited the former president from holding public office, the prohibition is not in effect until the court decision is confirmed by a superior court, a process that could take a year or more as Calderón moves to appeal the court decision.

The president of the PUSC party, Luis Fishman, clear said on Monday that "there is no plan B". Fishman and the party had placed all their faith on the belief that Calderón would be found not guilty.

Fishman admitted that the Monday's court decision was a strong blow to the party, who now must rush to elect a leader before the deadline of Ocotber 23, the last day for inscription of all candidates, even though the 2010 elections kicks off officially today.

Sánchez is a three time legislator, holding a legislative seat in 1990-1994 (during the Calderón presidency), again in 1998-2002 and re-elected in the current legislative body, as well as holding a number of posts in various legislative commissions.

Sánchez is 44 years old (born August 30, 1962) and is originally from ejibaye de Pérez Zeledón, a rural area, where he grew up with his four brothers. Sánchez obtained his law degree from the Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Autónoma de Centroamérica (UACA).
