Colombians March for Animal Rights
BOGOTA – Nearly 2,000 people carrying signs
and accompanied by their pets marched
through the streets of the Colombian capital
demonstrating against animal abuse and
calling for their rights to be defended and
respected.
The march, held Sunday on the occasion of
World Animal Day, proceeded from National
Park along one of the main avenues of Bogota
to the downtown Plaza de Bolivar.
The chief reason for the rally was “to call
on political leaders and citizens in general
to fight for animal-protection laws,” the
president of Bogota’s National Friends of
Animals Organization, Carolina Rozo, told
Efe.
“We have to love animals, we have to respect
animals. We have to love each other because
the planet is not just ours,” Rozo said.
During the demonstration, participants blew
hundreds of whistles while continuously
chanting such slogans as: “They have no
voice, we do”; “Bulls, yes, bullfighters,
no”; “Torture is neither art nor culture”
and “No more mistreatment of animals.”
All breeds of dogs, cats and even rabbits,
undoubtedly the stars of the show, trotted
and hopped down the streets of Bogota
alongside their masters, who imitated them
with disguises, masks and makeup.
A multitude of banners were also to be seen
emblazoned with slogans like: “A nation’s
greatness and its moral progress can be
judged by the way it treats its animals” and
“We fight for those that cannot speak.”
In other Colombian cities similar marches
were held Sunday to celebrate World Animal
