Missing Peace Corps Volunteer Found Safe in
Panama Park
PANAMA – A U.S. Peace Corps volunteer
reported missing in western Panama’s Baru
Volcano Park has been found “safe and sound”
by Sinaproc emergency management agency
personnel, the agency’s director, Arturo
Alvarado, said.
Yennifer Vilk went for a walk alone last
Thursday in the park, wandered off a trail
and got lost.
The 37-year-old American was able to use her
cell phone to call the Peace Corps office in
Panama City and ask for help.
Sinaproc launched a search and found her on
Saturday, Alvarado told reporters.
Rescue workers told Vilk in a telephone
conversation on Friday to stay in one place
and take shelter as protection against cold
temperatures and wild animals, the Sinaproc
chief said.
The Peace Corps volunteer has some minor
injuries and is dehydrated, Alvarado said.
Vilk was taken from the park to a private
clinic in David, the capital of the western
province of Chiriqui, by helicopter for a
medical examination.
