Salvadoran Police Arrest 33 on Murder
Charges
San Salvador – The Salvadoran police on
Tuesday captured 33 members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang wanted in connection with
seven murders.
Police said in a communique that the
gang members were taken into custody in an
operation staged Tuesday morning by 250
officers in several towns in the western
province of Sonsonate.
The arrests were effected using warrants
issued by the Attorney General’s Office, the
statement said.
The police report said that the people who
were arrested are accused of having
participated in seven murders committed
between 2005 and 2009, most of them over
“personal quarrels” among gangmembers.
Another 15 gangsters – who are presently
serving sentences in different prisons for
other crimes – will also be charged in the
murders.
Police emphasized that, with the arrests,
they had managed to break up the structure
of the Mara Salvatrucha cells operating in
different parts of Sonsonate.
Mara Salvatrucha and bitter rival Mara 18
are the main gangs in El Salvador, and
authorities attribute most of the crimes
reported in the country – in particular
murders and extortions – to their members.
