Mujica
Wins Uruguayan Presidential Election
MONTEVIDEO - Jose Mujica
from the ruling Broad Front party has won
the Uruguayan presidential run-off, exit
polls showed Sunday.
Exit polls gave Mujica more than 50 percent
of the vote, while his rival, former
president Luis Alberto Lacalle, trailed with
around 45 percent.
Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez arrived
at Mujica's campaign headquarters in the
evening and gave Mujica a warm hug,
congratulating him on the victory.
Despite rain, over 90 percent of the total
2.5 million registered voters went to
polling stations.
Mujica pocketed 49 percent of the vote in
the first round of the election in October.
Mujica, 74, was one of the leaders of the
Tupamaros urban guerrilla movement in the
1960s and 1970s.
His controversial past pushed away some
voters, but he received backing from others
thanks to his pledge to continue the current
economic policies, which encourage foreign
investment and strive to reduce unemployment
and enhance minority rights.
