Traditional Oxen Parade In San José Today
Some 350 "buyes" (oxen) from all over the
country will be on parade today in San José
in the traditional Desfile de Santos Boyeros.
The parade will also include folk music,
traditional costumes and more, all part of
the year end traditions.
The parade will leave at 9am the east side
of the Sabana park by the León Cortés
statue, move along Paseo Colón, onto Avenida
Segunda and end at the Plaza González Víquez.
This is the 13th annual parade that is being
held in San José, rising from the boyeros
initiative to rescue the tradition that was
being lost in the country's capital city.
The Municipalidad de San José has been
organizing the event, along with the support
of the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT)
- tourism board.
The "buey" (ox) was the work animal of the
past century, and on November 25, 2005,
UNESCO declared the national oxen an
Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
