Venezuelan Border with Colombia Well Guarded
CARACAS - Venezuelan Citizen Security Deputy
Minister, Gen. Juan Francisco Romero, said
on Wednesday that protection of the border
area in the state of Tachira, bordering
Colombia, is guaranteed.
We don't have to worry about the border
because it is well-guarded, said Romero, in
the start of a plan to reinforce public
order in southwestern Tachira state during
Christmas.
Romero bases his remarks on the increase in
troops deployed in the border area, recently
hit by violent actions attributed to
Colombian paramilitarism.
The Bolivarian National Guard has been
beefed up with two detachments brought from
the interior while the Army also sent
soldiers, he told Venezolana de Television.
Actions to defend the border rely on 4,000
men deployed in Tachira as part of the
police security operation for the final
weeks of 2009. They also have the mission to
confront robbery and other crimes, he
explained.
According to Romero, the Christmas plan
includes stepped up watch on roads and
banks.
It is worth noting that Police in Tachira,
an opposition-controlled state, excluded
itself from the operation, warned Romero as
he led the opening ceremony of the
government program to secure public order. |
