Death Toll in El Salvador Floods Stands at
157
SAN SALVADOR – The official death toll from
the floods caused by torrential rains last
weekend stands at 157, with 14,166 people
still in shelters, the emergency management
office said Thursday.
Emergency organizations as of Thursday
reported that 58 people are missing and
2,614 have been evacuated, emergency
management office director Jorge Melendez
said.
The local press reported the finding of nine
corpses in San Vicente province and six
others in La Libertad, which could raise the
official death toll.
Intense rains drenched five of the country’s
14 provinces last Saturday and Sunday, the
bad weather stemming from a low pressure
system over the Pacific that was intensified
by the passage of Hurricane Ida through the
Caribbean.
A total of 176 landslides, 13 incidents of
major flooding and 123 rivers overflowing
their banks have been reported to date,
along with damage to 1,779 houses and
another 220 completely destroyed, Melendez
said.
Twenty-four bridges in different parts of
the country have also been damaged by the
rising river waters, the official said. EFE
