Earthquake Shakes Northern Chile
SANTIAGO - An earthquake
measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale shook on
Wednesday the Chilean regions of Tarapaca,
Arica and Parinacota in the north of the
country, with no immediate reports of damage
or casualties.
The tremor occurred at 6:58 a.m. local time
(0958 GMT) and its epicenter was located
some 22 km south of Chiapa locality, some
1,800 km north of Santiago and some 200 km
from the border with Peru, according to a
report of the Chilean Seismologic Service
under the University of Chile.
According to the state-run National Office
of Emergencies (Onemi), the earthquake
intensity was between II and IV degrees in
Mercalli scale.
The Onemi said that the Pica locality
registered IV degrees, Hurara, Iquique, Alto
Hospicio and Pozo Almonte localities III
degrees, and Arica and Camina localities II
degrees. |
