Guerrillas Kill 9 Soldiers in Colombia
BOGOTA – At least nine soldiers were killed
and four others wounded early Tuesday in an
attack by Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia, or FARC, guerrillas on Corinto, a
city in the southwestern province of Cauca,
a military spokesman said.
About 30 rebels also died in the fighting,
according to media reports, but this
information has not been confirmed by
officials.
Eight enlisted men and a non-commissioned
officer died in the fighting, army 19th
Brigade commander Col. Luis Danilo Murcia
told several radio stations.
Some 200 FARC guerrillas launched the attack
on Corinto on Monday night, throwing
grenades at different targets in the city.
Army troops and air force personnel are
trying to keep the FARC from taking control
of the city, which has been without
electricity since Monday night, Corinto
Mayor Gilberto Muñoz said.
This is the fifth attack this year on
Corinto, but no civilians have been reported
injured so far, Muñoz said. EFE
