National Mourning in El Salvador
SAN SALVADOR - El Salvador's Legislative
Assembly decreed national mourning as of
Tuesday for the death of 140 people, due to
the rains of Tropical Storm Ida.
According to the regulation, the national
flag will be hoisted at half-mast for three
days in all ministries and state
institutions.
Recent Civil Protection Executive Department
reports said 49 percent of the confirmed
deaths are children and adolescents, a
figure that could increase because there are
about 70 missing people.
Intensive rains associated to the hurricane
have caused 108 landslides and floods in at
least five departments of the country, being
San Salvador and San Vicente those most
affected.
About 1,835 houses have been damaged, 209
totally destroyed, and around 1,400 are at
high risk.
So far, some 13,680 people have been
evacuated to 118 temporary shelters, located
in seven departments.
Faced with the disaster caused by the rains,
the Parliament declared the state of
calamity throughout the country, a decision
that supports the government in devoting
funds from any ministry to respond to the
emergency.
