Brazil Auto Output at 15-Month High
RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazil’s automotive sector,
the world’s sixth-biggest, produced 315,956
vehicles last month for its best performance
in 15 months, the Anfavea industry
association said Monday.
The total was 15.7 higher than September’s
and up 6.3 percent from October 2008,
marking a return to pre-recession levels,
according to Anfavea, an association
representing the Brazilian subsidiaries of
leading U.S., European and Asian automakers.
Brazil’s auto plants turned out nearly 2.64
million units in the first 10 months of the
year, a gain of 9.7 percent from the same
period last year.
Vehicle sales totaled 296,466 in October, a
record for the month, but off 4.6 percent
from September. Anfavea attributed the
decline to the expiration of tax breaks
aimed at bolstering the sector.
Nearly 2.6 million vehicles have been sold
so far in 2009, 6.1 percent more than in the
first 10 months of 2008.
Foreign sales, however, continued to lag far
behind pre-slump levels. Brazil exported
47,196 vehicles in October for $795.6
million, a decline of 31.2 percent by volume
and 39.7 percent by value from October 2008.
Year to date, the value of Brazilian vehicle
exports is $6.38 billion, down 47.2 percent
from the same period last year. EFE
