Discovers New Gas Reserves
LIMA - Peruvian President Alan Garcia said
on Thursday Peru has found a new gas field,
which has a reserve of quintillion cubic
feet, enough to guarantee the country's
energy demand till 2050.
"This early morning I was told, directly
from the jungle, that we could confirm that
in Field 58, we have found a great amount of
gas," Garcia said, adding he was waiting for
more details.
"Apparently, there is more than 1
quintillion cubic feet of gas in the first
well, and it is one of five wells or
structures. We can say that we have made a
big jump in energy security, in the
production capacity of our country beyond
the year 2050," Garcia told reporters.
"This will be extraordinary news because it
means adding tens of billions of U.S.
dollars to the assets of Peru and this will
bring more trust, more investment, big and
small, in our country," Garcia said.
Garcia said Peru has retrievable reserves in
Field 56 for 2.5 quintillion cubic feet,
plus the reserves of more than 9 quintillion
cubic feet in Field 88 and the other 2
quintillion cubic feet in Field 57, which
makes a total of almost 15 quintillion cubic
feet.
Garcia added that these resources will be
used for houses, vehicles, the mining
industry, petrochemical and gas export.
Currently, Peru has some 14 quintillion
cubic feet of gas in Camiseca, in Peru's
southern Cusco department.
