Actions to Stop Pollution of Guatemalan Lake
The installation of residual treatment
plants will be one of the actions to fight
the present cyanobacterie in the famous
Guatemalan lake of Atitlán, a point of
concern among authorities.
To begin this work a trusteeship of US 10
million that has been inactive during the
last decade will be used, and the Vice
president Rafael Espada assured was
discovered recently.
Espada also added that 10 years ago that sum
was assigned to invest in plants like this
ones in the cited lakeside area, but still
they are asking why it wasnâÖt used.
Another of the actions approved to work in
Atitlan is to forbid the use of inorganic
fertilizers and soaps, eliminate water
faucet in the shores, which are
contamination sources and create public
ponds with an efficient drainage.
They also will try to influence in the
change of the community habits owing to the
water use and the construction of homes, an
excess that cause a harmful damage in the
conditions of the lake in a every sense.
For his part, the Ministry of Environment
and Natural Resources, Luis Ferraté,
announced an inventory in course of the
infrastructure of the surrounding area, with
a present advance of 74 percent, in which he
stressed the trend to septic tanks. He also
said the recuperation of the lake must begin
in two or three years.
The strategy to stop the Atitlan worsening
is becoming urgent before the expansion of
the cyberbacterie in its waters, discovered
halfway through the month, besides the
contamination owing to other causes.
According to scientific opinions this micro
organism spreads in Atitlan because of
causes like the increase of the nitrates and
phosphates levels owing to the increasing
unloading of residual waters and the
inappropriate use of agrochemical
fertilizers.
That micro organism is an aquatic bacterium
which has photosynthetic pigments that
release oxygen as sub product of its
metabolism; some of them produces toxins and
could poison the animals of the habitat or
those that drink the water.
