Honduran Troops Attack Peaceful March
Tegucigalpa Honduran army soldiers and riot
police agents attacked on Thursday a
peaceful march by people opposing the
military coup, along the Carretera
Panamericana, a road which links the capital
with the country's northern area.
Witnesses told Radio Globo, a station in the
capital, the aggression started at about
10:20, local time, near El Durazno
community, over 3 miles from the city, on
one of the mountains that surround
Tegucigalpa.
A woman denounced that the soldiers and riot
police agents beat demonstrators and even
journalists who were reporting on the
incidents, putting forward that they would
not allow any more filming of these
repressive actions.
The Radio Globo reporter confirmed that
version before being forced to leave the
spot due to the effect of tear gas launched
by the military and police agents.
The journalist explained that the
demonstrators retreated downhill, towards
the capital, while being chased by the
repressive forces, which were beating the
civilians they captured, he reported.
The interviewed woman demanded that the de
facto government president, businessman
Micheletti, stop repressing people who are
demonstrating peacefully.
Micheletti, out! She shouted over the
reporter's microphone, before walking away
from the area.
The National Front against the Coup, which
groups the people's forces, began a 48-hour
national civil strike in the public sector,
demanding restoration of democracy, broken
by the coup on June 28.
