Calderon Praises Arias
Mexico's President Felipe Calderon on
Wednesday praised his Costa Rican
counterpart, Oscar Arias, for the mediation
work following Honduras' June 28 coup.
According to official sources, Calderon told
colleagues in a private meeting that "Costa
Rica's and Arias' great triumph has been in
getting the two parties to the conflict to
sit at the same table."
Calderon met with other regional heads of
state at the 11th Tuxtla Summit of the
Dialogue and Agreement Mechanism, in Pinilla
Hacienda, Guanacaste, where the summit is
being held and the presidents or
representatives from Colombia, Mexico,
Central America and the Dominican Republic
are attending the meeting.
Arias has proposed that Manuel Zelaya, the
Honduran president who was deposed in the
June 28 military coup, and Roberto
Micheletti, who took over the presidential
power after the coup, share power and grant
an amnesty after Zelaya returns to office.
The proposal, known as the "Acuerdo de San
José" (San José Accord), is "viable,
reasonable and should be carried out,"
Calderon said.
He also described Arias as "the region's
wise man."
