San José -
Heredia Train To Begin Running August 10,
Incofer Says
The Heredia - San José commuter train will
be running next month according to Instituto
Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (Incofer) -
Costa Rican railway - as the legal issues
blocking the tracks have been cleared.
If all goes well, the first train from San
José to Heredia should leave the Estación
del Atlántico, located on the northeast
corner of the Parque Nacional (National
Park), at 8am on Saturday, August 8, in its
inaugural run.
Full service will then commence on Monday,
August 10, with trains running in the
weekday morning and afternoon rush hours,
making two stops in between the San José and
Heredia terminals, carrying thousands of
passengers daily and reducing vehicular
traffic congestion.
But, don't get too excited, the Incofer has
made such promises in the past, only to them
derailed.
The Incofer says that only two of the four
locomotives will be operating for the first
couple of weeks, the other two expected to
begin service by September, which will
increase the number of daily runs to 42.
The cost to the trip is ˘350 colones each
way which can be purchased at the terminals
or on the train.
Some 5.000 people daily are expected to use
the train.
The train service is expected to be very
popular for Heredianos, who has been
patiently waiting for more than a year, with
a series of setbacks and broken
promises by railway officials.
Some of the delays in getting the trains
running was the delays in getting ready for
the Costa Rican tracks the locomotives
purchased from Spain's railway and the
latest legal battle between the Incofer and
a landowner abutting the tracks, a case that
was agreed to be resolved mutually at the
insistence of the judge in the case. |
