Block Opposition From Meeting Zelaya
Managua - Supporters of
Nicaragua's ruling party on Tuesday blocked
the opposition from delivering a letter to
ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya.
About 100 supporters of the ruling party,
Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN),
blocked the highway to Ocotal near Zelaya's
camp, the Nicaraguan border with Honduras,
stopping deputies from the opposition
Nicaraguan Democratic Bloc (BDN) to reach
the deposed president.
The opposition had planned to hand a letter
to Zelaya, requesting him to stop using
Nicaragua as a "rebellious base," local
media said.
Zelaya and his followers are currently
camping in Ocotal to organize "pacific
resistance" against the post-coup Honduran
government. Their stay was permitted by the
Nicaraguan government.
The opposition did not say whether they
supported Zelaya or the post-coup
government.
Zelaya was forced into exile after a coup on
June 28. He had angered the army, the
legislative and judiciary by insisting on a
constitutional amendment that would allow
him to seek re-election. Since then, his
demand for reinstatement has been rejected
by the post-coup government.
The Nicaraguan government condemned the coup
and demanded Zelaya's reinstatement.
Nicaraguan opposition leader Eduardo
Montealegre traveled to Honduras on Tuesday
to try to meet with post-coup leader Roberto
Micheletti.
