Weekend Of Traffic Nightmares On The General
Cañas
Traffic congestion on th autopista General Cañas
from San Jose to Alajuela at the Virilla
bridge was more than usual, caused by the
rubber necking to see the metal plates and
the work done on the bridge, slowing down
traffic and backing it up to the Pablo II
bridge.
The bridge has fallen in a state of
disrepair, mainly due to lack of preventive
maintenance over the years and has been the
cause of many traffic nightmares as repair
crews try to put a temporary fix on the
problem.
The latest traffic nightmare was on the
weekend of July 11, when the autopista was
completed closed off in the San Jose -
Alajuela direction, causing a massive
traffic congestion on the alternate routes
of Heredia and Santa Ana.
Days later the repair work of the weekend
already showed signs of frailty and work
crews had to again shut down the autopista
over several nights.
But, that work didn't take either.
The Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi)
says that that for the next few days
(Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), the
autopista will be shut down, once again,
between 10pm and 5m and then completely from
Friday night (July 31) and re-open on the
morning of August 2.
Benjamín Sandino, director of the Conavi,
explained that the road needs to be
completely closed for work crews to work on
the full span of the westbound lane of the
bridge.
The weekend work will include installing a
steel beam to support the bridge and
hopefully stop causing problems to the metal
plates installed on the surface of the
bridge.
Best to avoid the area entirely this weekend
and give yourself extra time - a lot of
extra time - if you really need to travel
from San Jose to Cariari and points beyond.
During the last complete closure of the
autopista, it took up to three hours to go
from La Uruca to Cariari, either by way of
Heredia or Santa Ana. |
