Despite the objections by the Asociación de
Profesores de Segunda Enseñanza (APSE), the
Ministerio de Educación (MEP) opened the
doors to the schools ending an extended
mid-year school vacation for almost 1
million students.
The ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila,
gave the green light on Friday to allow the
return to school today, saying that the
figures show that the AH1N1 virus is not
attacking the younger population.
Although schools are being instructed to
adopt strict measures to avoid infection, by
insuring that all schools have a good supply
of water and soap and refusing the
admittance of any student coming to school
with a cold.
The return to school was to taken place last
Monday (July 20). Salud officials, however,
decided to extend the vacation due to the
rising number of confirmed infections and
deaths, which today stands at 17.
"Everyone has responsibilities in accordance
with age and for children and young people
their primary responsibility is to study,
this allows them to develop their talents
and strengths that will be useful in
adulthood," said Alejandrina Mata, Vice
Minister of Education.
Despite the extended vacation, Leonardo
Garnier, the Education minister, said the
school year won't be extended. Garnier said
the school year would end on December 18 as
had been scheduled.
The minister said that teachers will include
in their teaching plans a make up for the
time lost. |
