Guanacaste Celebrates Today Its 185th
Anniversary
Today is July 25 and the anniversary of the
185th anniversary of the Anexión del Partido
de Nicoya, the integration of the province
of Guanacaste to Costa Rica.
As is custom the government will hold its
cabinet meeting in Nicoya, as the Guanacaste
province is full of celebrations, although
this year the events may not draw big
crowds, one as school children are still on
their school break and the fear of spreading
the AH1N1 flu virus.
The Partido de Nicoya was invited by Costa
Rica to join the union on April 4, 1824, but
it wasn't until July 25 of that year that
the invitation was accepted.
And although the annexation was not ratified
until December 9, the anniversary has been
celebrated for the last 185 years always on
July 25.
