Honduras Warns of US Complicity
Tegulcigalpa - Leaders of the National
Front against the Coup in Honduras warned
Friday about complicity of the US with the
June 28 military coup that defeated
President Manuel Zelaya.
If Coupists are still in power it is because
the US is giving them certain support and
help, affirmed Juan Barahona, one of the
main leaders of the Front, to Prensa Latina.
He explained that that is what gives life to
the de facto government, which has otherwise
been isolated and sentenced almost
unanimously by the international community
and condemned by massive peaceful resistance
on the streets.
Barahona noted that the United States has
two positions, one of condemning the coup
and the other of giving very discreet
support to the Coupists.
After almost a month the US government has
still not yet considered the forced removal
of Constitutional President Manuel Zelaya as
a coup d'etat, as it is considered by the
rest of the world.
According to US sources cited by the press
here that step would mean they would have to
create sanctions and lift humanitarian aid
to this country, a step which the Obama
administration seems to want to avoid.
The trade union leader and presidential
candidate Carlos Humberto Reyes said that US
extreme right sectors, even inside the
government, are accomplices of the attempted
coup.
Barahona pointed out that Costa Rica
President Oscar Arias's mediation in the
crisis, as requested by the United States,
is no more than a dilatory tactic to allow
the de facto government to gain time.
Those procedures failed because of the
refusal of Coupists to accept Zelaya's
conditional return to the presidency.
La Tribuna Newspaper firmly committed with
the attempted coup, revealed Tuesday that US
ambassador in Tegucigalpa Hugo Llorens told
politicians and Coupists managers about
Arias proposal 24 hours before the
resumption of talks last Saturday.
