Venezuela on Alert for US Bases in Colombia
Caracas - Venezuela is currently experiencing an
atmosphere of mobilization, faced with the
decision by Washington and Bogota of
establishing four other US bases in
neighboring Colombia.
Fireign Minister Niocolas Maduro reported on
Thursday that he met with Colombian
ambassador Maria Luisa Chiapas to state
clear his government stance as regards that
decision, which led to review bilateral
relations.
"Our proposal for peace has been slapped by
the Colombia government, with the opening of
four new military bases," Maduro told press
after the meeting with the diplomat.
"He also said the decision paves the way for
a threat, not only against Venezuela, but
also against the whole region," and creates
a new situation that takes back all the
progress made.
The Venezuelan minister also said he
requested that Bogota explained the
statements by Honduran de facto Foreign
Minister Carlos Flores, who said to have
shared apprehensions about the Venezuelan
government, with Colombian President Alvaro
Uribe.
According to Flores' version, Uribe
expressed his admiration for having a clear
vision against Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez.
Maduro confirmed suspension of a top level
meeting between Colombia and Venezulea that
should analyze in Bogota projects of trade,
investment and cooperation in different
spheres.
