General Canas
Closed Again Last Night
If you were like many last night you found
the autopista General Canas from San Jose to
Alajuela closed from La Uruca to the Cariari.
The closure was a surprise to most as the
Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi),
without prior notice, closed the section of
the highway at 10pm, to repair the repair
that was to have repaired the metal plate
holding together the Virilla bridge.
The highway was closed for more than 52
hours the weekend of July 11 when repair
crews worked on the bridge, causing
tremendous traffic congestion that added up
to two or more hours to travel from La Uruca
to Cariari.

Vial del Conavi, explained that the repair
work is cosmetic, so that you cannot see to
the bottom of the canyon and in now way
affects the structural integrity of the
bridge.
Sandino added that a complete closure of the
highway will again have to take place the
weekend of August 2 to install a bottom
plate to complete the work.
