Taxi Fares To Increase
One of the best deals in Costa Rica is
hiring a taxi. In many cases, it is cheaper
to hire a taxi that drive one's own vehicle,
when comparing the cost of gasoline and
parking in downtown San Jose. But, that soon
could all change.
The Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios
Públicos (Aresep) is analyzing a proposal to
raise taxi fares to ¢700 colones for the
first kilometre, up from the curent ¢435 and
6% on the additional kilometres.
Maikol Sosa, general manager of the
Federación Nacional de Cooperativas de Taxi,
explained that the increase is to offset the
increasing operating costs of gasoline and
repairs.
Sosa adds that the current rates are based
on operating costs of four years ago and is
asking the Aresep to update its figures when
considering the fare increase proposal.
The proposal to increase fares should be
discussed by the Aresep in the first week of
August and be in effect by the following
month.
Th federation head said that operating a
taxi is now bad business, as income is not
keeping pace with the increases in costs. |
