Colombia Promises
Millions Of Dollars For
Capturing Guerilla

Bogota - Rewards of up
to 5 billion Colombian
pesos (us$2.5 million
dollars) will be set
aside for direct
delivery or information
leading to the capture
of FARC (the
Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia)
guerilla leaders,
Colombian Defense
Ministry said Friday.
The government has
planned rewards of "5
million pesos (2,500
U.S. dollars) for each
of the FARC's
Secretariat and 1
billion pesos (500,000
dollars) for the members
of the FARC Chief
Staff," said Commander
of the Military Forces,
General Freddy Padilla
de Leon.
FARC suffered setbacks
last year, especially
after the death in May
of one of its top
leaders, "Manuel
Marulanda."
Padilla has sent a
message to FARC
guerillas, calling on
them to abandon
confrontation with the
government in the rough
jungle and mountainous
areas.
"What is convenient is
to accept the
demobilization program,
do not let be cheated --
FARC is a failed
project," Padilla said.
A disarmament program is
currently underway in
government jails where
at least 1,000 former
combatants have
expressed a willingness
to give up fighting
against the government.
The Colombian government
also promised rewards
and accommodations in
foreign countries for
the guerilla deserters
who release hostages
held by the rebel group.
