Guatemala to Have First Illiteracy Free Area
GUATEMALA - Guatemala will boast its first
illiteracy-free municipality on January 10
thanks to the Cuban method "Yo Si Puedo"
(Yes-I Can), local Mayor Jeannete Ordonez
announced on Tuesday.
On that day, all 550 people included in the
program in San Cristobal Acasaguastlan, in
central El Progreso department, will receive
their certificates, she added.
Ordonez took part in the fourth workshop of
this literacy drive in two years, organized
by those collaborating in the effort in this
Central American nation, where over 25
percent of the population doesn't know how
to read and write.
The Mayor of San Cristobal Acasaguastlan
extolled the work carried out by dozens of
Cuban advisors, who have set the target of
100,000 people reading and writing by 2010.
The Cuban Embassy in Guatemala was the venue
of this workshop to mark the 48th
anniversary of the proclamation of Cuba as
an illiteracy-free territory on December 22
(Teacher's Day).
