Colombia's Uribe: FARC Responsible for Delay
BOGOTA - Colombian President Alvaro
Uribe held the guerrilla responsible for
delaying the release of uniformed people in
their hands and said his government has
fulfilled all conditions.
"It is time to release them; you know that
the government has met every demand and they
have not released them. Why? It is high time
for them to release them," said Uribe in
remarks to journalists.
However, this view is not shared by Liberal
Senator Piedad Cordoba, who recently
denounced the lack of guarantees b y the
government to start operations to release
two people held by the Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC).
She said that President Uribe has not
established the guarantees to start the
release of noncommmissioned officer Pablo
Emilio Moncayo and soldier Josue Daniel
Calvo, as well as the handing over of
remains of Major Julian Ernesto Guevara to
his family.
Cordoba's opinion is shared by the father of
non-commissioned officer Moncayo, Professor
Gustavo Moncayo, who has repeatedly
denounced the obstacles placed by the
government, in spite of FARC's express will.
The unilateral releases were announced by
FARC as of April 16 with the only condition
that same guarantees of previous similar
processes are granted and implemented in
order to prevent provocations like those
occurred in previous prisoner handing-overs.
The process has faced several difficulties
since them, in the wake of further
conditions, disavowal of mediators and
delays by the government. |
