Protest Against Honduras ALBA Withdrawal
TEGUCIGALPA - The National Front Against the
Coup in Honduras called a demonstration to
protest the coup regime''s decision to
withdraw the country from the Bolivarian
Alliance for the Peoples of Our America
(ALBA).
The protest will take place on January 7 and
will be the first announced by the
resistance for New Year, leaders of the
movement said at the end of an assembly.
Honduras joined ALBA on 25 August 2008.
Adherence to this mechanism of integration
brought many benefits to the country in
sectors such as education, health, energy
and food production.
In the energy sector, joining the ALBA and
Petrocaribe in particular, ensured a stable
supply of 20 thousand barrels of oil at
preferential prices and low interest rates.
The Central American country received from
that block 100 modern tractors in addition
to plows, planters and other farm implements
to promote production.
Honduras was also benefited by Operation
Miracle, a Cuban-Venezuelan project that
restored or improved vision to about 40.000
citizens and the method "Yes I Can" which
allowed the alphabetization of thousands of
people. All these plans will be suspended if
the National Congress approves the
initiative sent to the legislature by the
head of the de facto regime Roberto
Micheletti, to withdraw Honduras from the
Bolivarian Alliance.
